"SdKfz 2 Kleines Kettenkraftrad".

Operating a Kettenkrad.

Mounting.

The Kettenkrad is an awkward vehicle to mount. I have found it is best for the preservation of the paint scheme to park my backside on the left hand fuel tank and then lift and swing my legs over it. The driving position is a clutter of rod and levers and thus I then have to feed my legs down into the troughs whilst at the same time shifting over to the saddle.
You will see all sorts of techniques used, the least popular with owners is to stand on the fuel tank or drag shoes over it. Hence most owners will not be very accommodating to requests from the public to be allowed to sit in the saddle.

The most often seen mounting technique. I do not know the orgin of
this picture, but it appears to be quite recent, probably one of the military
vehicle rallies in the UK or USA.

For some behavioural reason, children mount the vehicle from the rear, then proceed to climb up the back seat, over the seat back then the engine cover (which is painted) and then on to the saddle. Also not conduct which pleases an owner.
