Operating a Kettenkrad.
Kettenkrades were manufactured as 6 volt vehicles and are best left this way unless you really are adverse to that now odd amount of voltage and battery size. Conversion is not much different to that of any 6 volt vehicle. The temptation to disconnect the generator and to leave the starter motor as 6 volt, but feed it with 12 volts, will likely result in destruction of the starter. As you would guess, Kettenkrad starter motors are problematical at best to obtain.

The Stufenschalter - Blackout light sequencing switch.
However, fiddling with the voltage does have other issues if you want to have all the intersting bits functioning. The Stufenschalter pictured above is 6 volts only. It is a series of resistance steps to control the brightness of the blackout lighting. If you convert to 12 volts, then you need to have a 12 volt Stufenschalter. Not cheap, even as a reproduction.

The step switch for the night march equipment has the following positions:
O = Camouflage headlight and spacer taillight switched off.
H = Camouflage headlight switched off, spacer taillight switch on.
V1 = Camouflage headlight with duller shine strength and spacer tail light switched on.
V2 = Camouflage headlight with medium shine strength and spacer taillight switched on.
V3 = Camouflage headlight full strength and spacer tail light switched on.
