Mud City #1
Stuart and Bren Carrier 5th June 1994
The infamous "Mud City". This was brought about by the farmer (who had been paid not to remove his crop) doing so despite all arrangements.
The mess was caused by the arriving wheeled vehicles, not the armour which didn't arrive till later. Not visible in the photo's are the 2 Gendarme's on the gate to prevent any vehicles which were not wearing English markings from leaving the camp, as it was nearby to Port-en- Besin and Arromanche which were in the British sector.
There was one very annoyed American M5A1 Stuart owner who had bought his vehicle all the way from the USA and had been told it would be confiscated if it left the camp as it was wearing the wrong markings (American).
The Belgian camp was so bad that the only way to get to the showers and toilets was by Jeep in 4wd and even then it was chancy; they just chose a bad site.
6th October 1998, email received from Bob Fleming, England:
The lady driving the Stuart at Mud City is Belinda Hickman, the wife of Mitch Hickman, the Stuart's owner and a great guy!
