Easy filling of gear reduction hubs on FV series vehicles
(eg, Ferret, Saladin, Saracen etc)
Andy has come up with an idea which speeds up the tedious "official" way of filling the hubs on these vehicles. The trick is to use a manual suction pump - it takes 2 people.
The link below takes you offsite, so make sure you do a "right mouse click" and "open in new window". The short video should take roughly 5 minutes on a 33,600 bps modem to download and be able to be played by your computer automatically in any version of "Windows 95" or later.
"One of the most time consuming jobs on the Sarracen, Saladin and to some extent the Ferret (Though nowhere near as bad) is filling the wheel hub reduction box's. The following movie shows how to do each one in under a minute.
You need a funnel that is a good fit in the filler hole (this hole is either 1/2" BSP or 3/8" BSP (British standard pipe)). Put some insulation tape around the bottom of the funnel to make the fit airtight if need be. Measure out your oil quantity into a jug and poor into the funnel. Then put the end of an oil syringe down though the funnel into the hub and pull the handle to create a vacuum in the hub. Quickly pull out the oil syringe and watch as the oil goes into the hub. Two people can fill a hub with 4 pints of hypoid gear oil in under a minute."
My thanks to Andy.
