Vince's reproduction Ferret sand channels.    (Ver 1)

The subject of Ferret sand channels comes up quite often. There is no doubt that Ferrets look "complete" with a pair of channels on their glacis plate. In general, any Ferret in British use was so equipped. As time went by, the channels seem to have been destroyed or lost; so quite often you see pictures of serving vehicles without channels. You also see pictures of Marsden Matting or PSP (what emergency and Pacific theatre coral runways were made from) substituted. This practise, although it looks wrong, was legitimate.

As Ferret sand channels have been rare for a long time and there is most certainly a demand for them, it was inevitable that someone would go to all the trouble to get tooled up to make reproductions, this someone is Vince in the USA!

Here are pictures of the repro sand channels.
Pricing is $400US per set of two plus shipping.
Material is 7 gauge steel.
Weight is 60lbs each.
The hole pattern is based on the originals.

Owners of Australian Ferrets please note that ours were purchased without sand channels so it is correct for our vehicles not to have them fitted. I do not recall ever seeing a picture of an Aussie Ferret in service with Marsden Matting or PSP either. But, as they are readily removable, I don't see any problem in fitting them to Aussie Ferrets; you never know, you just may need to use them one day to recover the vehicle!

Thanks to Vince for the article.
