BTR-40 in the USA.
   (Ver 1)

I bought my BTR-40 from a guy in Georgia, who got it from David Urhig. David said it and another BTR, along with some other vehicles, were brought in from Isreal several years back. Mine is a 1951 mod., in really good condition, drove it around the block after unloading it. However, it has a bad water pump and am currently having that rebuilt. This one has a Dodge Flat 6 in it, not sure if it is original or an Isreali upgrade, might be original as the ruskies had all our tooling from WWII. The brake system, at least the Master Cyl. is also dodge and am having to replace that. Otherwise, mine will be street legal soon. David said this was an Isreali capture from the Egyptians during the 7-day war. Has Hebrew data plates, a Russian speedo, Stewart Warner oil and amp gauges, and a French thermo. Brand spanking new tires made in the USSR. I don't have a manual, but really dont need one at this point. An M-37 or Dodge WC manual are similar and show most all common parts. However the T-case and diffs. are GAZ-63. Oh, by the way, the red star is coming off!.

My vehicle is in pretty good shape, I took the gas tanks out, one good and one bad. Will only use the front one after lining it w/a sealer. Seems the Isrealis used the back tank as water storage as it was nearly full of fresh water!! Also installed a Dodge M37 master cylinder, it seems to work great although the holes were about a 1/4" off, used smaller bolts and that did the trick.

The electrics on this thing are mongrel, partially 12v, partially 24v. Seems the Isrealis just sorta pieced this thing together, but it all seems to run ok. It really freaked me out that this thing had a Dodge engine. Couldn't believe it! But that makes for easy repairs.
